Big River Interpretive Walk

Saturday, July 17, 2010 - 10:00 - 12:00

Big River Interpretive Walks provide the opportunity for both visitors and residents of the coast to discover interesting facts about Big River while enjoying beautiful views of California's longest undeveloped estuary.  Learn about redwood ecology, the Big River Estuary, plants and animals, cultural history, and more.

Big River Interpretive Walks are free of charge and open to the public.  2010 Interpretive Walks occur on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m., weather permitting.

Walks begin at the Big River Kiosk located at the eastern end of the Big River Beach parking lot, south of Mendocino.  Walks cover a total of two to four miles, are moderately paced and last for one to two hours.  Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.  Comfortable walking shoes, water and binoculars are recommended for anyone attending.

Big River Interpretive Walks are part of the Mendocino Land Trust's Big River Program, which was formed after the Land Trust worked with the local community to raise $25.6 million dollars to purchase and convey Big River to California State Parks in 2002, permanently protecting 7,334 acres of estuary and surrounding forestland.  Today, the Big River Program works in partnership with Mendocino District State Parks, undertaking restoration and preservation efforts, as well as outreach and education.
